Welcome to Talking Italian!

Back in 1984 the song Robert De Niro’s Waiting written and recorded by the British girl group Banarama reached number three in the UK singles charts.

The chorus has these lines:

Robert De Niro’s waiting
Talking Italian

and whilst a literal translation doesn’t scan to the music, this is a working translation:

Robert De Niro’s attesa

Parlare Italiano

Apparently, and according to Banarama, Robert De Niro asked to meet the girls after the song came out.

But of course that might just be an urban myth, or, as we say in Italian:

leggenda metropolitana

In 2004 Robert De Niro was granted Italian citizenship.
